First, make it a point to clean your teeth and gums thoroughly, every day. Use a very soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean your teeth and gum tissues for two minutes. Think “massage” more than “scrub.” You should also floss your teeth once per day for two to three minutes each time. If flossing has become difficult for you, talk with your dentist about other interdental cleaning alternatives, such as pre-strung flossers or a water flosser. The addition of an over-the-counter therapeutic mouthwash may be a good idea for the hygiene habits of some people.
You’ve heard it before, but you’ll hear it again here: stop using tobacco products. Not only is tobacco use very bad for your overall health, it also promotes tooth decay and gum disease. The best thing you can do for your smile–and your overall health–is to quit smoking and using tobacco.
